Elliptical Stride Length Explained – What Option Is Best When Buying An Elliptical?

Buying an elliptical trainer, but confused about the elliptical stride length? What exactly is elliptical stride and which length is best for you?

Elliptical trainers have changed a bit over the last few years – and you have more options than ever when it comes to stride length. So here are a few things you should know before you buy.

First of all, what is elliptical stride length?

This is basically the farthest distance between the elliptical pedals – kind of like your running stride.

Crosstrainers come with a range of different lengths. So for example a short stride of 14 – 16 inches will give you more of a short, choppy, stair-climbing feel. For many people this is not the most comfortable length.

A longer stride (18 to 20 inches) will feel more natural and comfortable. It also more fully works your leg muscles. This means you get a better overall workout (and burn more calories).

Which stride length is best for my height?

For most people under 6 foot 2 inches, an 18 – 20 inch stride feet most comfortable. If you're taller than that, you'll probably want a 21 inch stride.

If you're shorter than 5 foot 3 inches, you'll probably find that 18 inches is most comfortable.

But there are now other options on the market now like:

# 1 Adjustable Stride

Some elliptical trainers now offer adjustable strides. The Nordictrack ACT trainers for example let you set your stride at 18, 20 and 22 inches.

This is a great option if you have multiple users in your home since everyone can choose the setting that feels right for them.

Some ellipticals also give you incline. Incline or ramp changes the slope of your elliptical pathway. This works different groups of muscles and adds a lot more challenge to your workout.

# 3 Variable Motion Ellipticals

This is a new hybrid type of elliptical trainer that lets you choose your own stride as you workout (it's not a set length).

The stride is “set” by your own leg motion and force. The Nordictrack Freestride trainer is an example of this kind of elliptical and the benefit is that you are always changing up your workout.

So you can technically get a more diverse – and more optimal workout – since your body can not adapt to one set motion. Since it can not adapt, it does not get more efficient at the motion (and then burn less calories).

So your body is always challenged to burn the maximum amount of calories (and get a more effective workout).

Booty Got Back

Has your booty been feeling a little on the chunky side of late? Like it's taking on its own personality. It's starting to think for itself. Have its own social life. Like it's actually sitting next you on the couch, not under you. It will not budge. Stubborn and proclaiming it's right to vote.

Well maybe I'm going too far. But you get my drift.

There was nothing stopping me from getting my butt into gear and getting fit.

I had time after work. I had a gym membership. I had the new sneakers and gym clothes.

Nothing. Stopping. Me.

But there was something stopping me. Because every time I tried to exercise there was that niggling voice in my head that talked me out of it. Maybe it was my butt talking. Telling me such things as 'I do not want to catch a cold and it's going to rain, so I better go straight home after work'. There. Was. One. Cloud. Week after week I was wasting money on my gym membership while my gut grow and great.

Lack of Motivation Was a Brick Wall

Then I finally realized. I had a serious lack of motivation. I had to conquer it. Somehow.

I found a friend to go to the gym with me. That really helped. We encouraged each other to go. But that was just one night of the week. The other nights it was just me and my butt. And my butt won out every time.

How to Get Fit and Maintain Dignity

The idea of ​​a personal trainer did not appeal to me. I imagined a super fit and tanned, super human shouting down at me to do more push ups, whilst I crumbled at their feet, sweating from my knees with my butt crack exposed for the world to see. No, paying someone to do that sounded like a kind of torture that was not for me.

I'll Try Anything

So then one day a friend recommended I try a fitness tracker. A fitness tracker is like a pimped out version of a pedometer. It tracks daily exercise and even sleep. You use an app to set daily targets and goals. After a week or so I bit the bullet and bought a Fitbit thing (I can be a tight ass as well as having a big ass). I attached the little device to my clothing every day. I started off with smaller goals of 5000 steps and then slowly increased to 10,000 steps.

Finally I found motivation. I found myself taking the long way to the shops. I took the stairs at work and at the mall instead of the elevator or escalator. I actually went to the gym. I told my husband and he joined in. It became a nightly thing where we would compare steps.

So it's still early days, but I'm feeling so much better now I'm getting Planet Butt back into shape, one step at a time.

Looking for a treadmill desk? Walking workstations are becoming much more popular as people seek to get healthier and slimmer while they work.

In fact, studies are now showing that standing and / or walking while you work is much healthier for you than sitting in front of a computer for hours (which can actually be hazardous to your health!)

So if you're ready to fight that dreaded spread that often comes with sitting down for hours at a time, you're probably thinking about a treadmill desk.

You have several different options in this area, depending on what you already have at home, your budget and circumstances. Here are 3 suggestions to get a walking workstation in your home:

# 1 If You Do not Have a Treadmill:

One of the best options here is to buy a treadmill with a built-in desk option, instead of buying a treadmill and desk separately (which can be a lot more expensive).

There are a number of great desk treadmills that will do double duty as both a treadmill (where you can walk on an incline, run or try a built-in workout) and as a desk (where you can slow down and walk while you work on a computer). Both Nordictrack and Proform make some great models here.

If you do not care about “working out” and just want to walk, then you may want more of a walking workstation (Lifespan makes some good ones in this category).

The speeds are limited so you can not run. And there are no incline options. But you still get a solid, well-cushioned treadmill decks with large workspace.

# 2 If You Already Have A Treadmill:

You can buy an add-on desk that will hold your laptop, phone, pens papers etc. A popular desk option here is the Trekdesk. It fits over most treadmills and – while a bit bulky – does not give you a very large working area.

The only downside is that these can be a bit expensive (around $ 500) and they do take up a lot of space. There are other desks on the market similar to the Trekdesk and new ones are coming out every year.

Also, depending on your treadmill layout, be aware that these desks can sometimes block your console – or part of the console – and the handrests. So it creates a bit of a tradeoff between watching your workout stats vs having a desk space.

# 3 If You're Handy and Have A Treadmill:

This is the trickiest and most time-consuming option. But if you're handy you may want to try building your own desk and placing it over your treadmill.

You can find plans all over the Internet that show you how to do this, but as I've never tried this option, I can not vouch for how safe this is.

Still, if you're up for a challenge and have the time, it might be the most budget-friendly option.

So those are 3 of the best ways to get a walking workstation for your home or office.

Regardless of what you decide to do, just remember that when you're walking and using the treadmill desk, you're only meant to walk at very slow speeds – 0.5 – 1.5 MPH.

You're not trying to train for a marathon or burn mega-calories with a walking workstation. You're supposed to go slow. Take your time and in a few months, you will see the difference in both your waistline and health.

Best Treadmill For Heavy People – Suggestions and Treadmill Recommendations

Looking for the best treadmill for heavy people? Sometimes people who are a bit heavier than they'd like to be are nervous about buying a treadmill.

They want to find the right one and, quite frankly, going to the store with rows upon rows of treadmills can be downright intimidating (I know it is for me and I review treadmills for a living!)

So to help you make a more informed decision, here are some suggestions on what to look for when choosing the best treadmill for heavy people (along with some recommendations of models to consider).

# 1 Motor Power

The motor is the heart of your treadmill. So you want to strong motor that can power the belt with ease. The harder you're planning on working your treadmill, the stronger your motor needs to be.

Look for at least a 3.0 HP motor or more here – and make sure it's covered by a good motor warranty (25 years up to a lifetime).

# 2 User Weight Capacity

The User Weight Capacity can tell you a lot about the stability of a treadmill. For example, cheaper treadmills usually come with a 250 – 275 pound user weight capacity.

While that sounds pretty good, I personally would not recommend these treadmills for a 250 or even 200 pound person. They can still be pretty flimsy since these are the lowest user weight capacities you usually find on the market.

If you're 200 pounds or more, you really should be looking for a 350 – 400 lb user weight capacity (400 pounds is ideal). That means that it's a lot more solid and stable than the 250 pound user weight capacity treadmill. It's built to take more stress on the belt and deck without giving you any problems.

If you're over 300 pounds, you'll probably want to look at a treadmill with a 500 pound user weight capacity. These are harder to find – but you can usually find a health club brand like a Star Trac or Landice which can suit you.

# 3 Brand

There are different treadmill brands for different markets. For example, some brands are known for making economy, starter treadmills that should only be used for occasional walking.

Other brands focus on making runner-grade, solid, built-like-a-truck treadmills that are excellent for heavier users.

These also have the kind of cushioning you'll need to protect your joints as you walk.

What are some good brands?

I like some of the higher end Nordictrack models – especially their “Commercial” series like the 2950 or the 2450 or their incline trainers like the X11 or X9i (not their starter models under $ 1000).

The Sole F85 is also a decent treadmill with tough construction and a beefy motor.

Any of the Precor and Lifefitness treadmills are also great in this category as well – although these are more commercial and can be quite expensive ($ 3000 and up).

And again, if you're over 300 pounds, you may want to look at a Commercial Star Trac or Landice.

So to summarize, if you're looking for the best treadmill for heavy people, you want a treadmill with a super-strong motor, high 400 lb user weight capacity and a solid brand behind you.

Take your time, do not let any salesperson rush you and go with a model you really like. The great thing about all of your options today is that you are in the driver's seat.

The downside to this machine is that you can not run on it like a treadmill. Also, the motorized version starts around $ 2000 and up, so it's not the most budget-friendly option.

You have a much wider range of options than with a Treadclimber – and prices also range from $ 600 up to $ 3000. There are a lot of great benefits to a home treadmill.

First of all, unlike a Treadclimber, you can run on it. So there's a bit more versatility there.

Also, there's a new type of treadmill on the market, called an incline trainer that gives you a lot of the same benefits of a Treadclimber. It gives you from 0 – 40% incline.

High incline walking can burn up to 5 times the calories as walking on a flat incline treadmill.

Another benefit to the treadmill are that today's models give you a lot of entertainment options you do not find on a Treadclimber or an elliptical.

For example, how about a built-in web browser so you can surf the net as you walk?

What about a desk option so you can work on your computer as you walk? Or even a built-in TV so you can watch your favorite shows while working out?

If you want to add some enjoyment to your workout, a treadmill gives you a lot of great options.

One of the downsides to a treadmill are that there are not a lot of options to work your arms (unless you want to invest in some handweights and pump away as you walk).

# 3 Elliptical Trainer

Elliptical trainers mimic your running stride without a lot of jarring impact. Plus, they usually have moving arm bars that will work your upper body.

The downside to these machines is that they can be a little awkward to get used to. Plus you have to make sure you get the right stride length.

A shorter strider (like on a cheap elliptical) will feel extremely uncomfortable and might even give you that jerky start-and-stop motion that a lot of people (rightly so) can not stand.

Having run a treadmill review website for over 8 years now, I regularly look at what words people are searching to find my site.

Because Nordictrack does not make a Treadclimber. There's no such machine. Bowflex actually makes the famous Treadclimber.

I think a lot of people are getting confused because Nordictrack makes a similar high incline type of treadmill called the incline trainer. It's similar to the Bowflex Treadclimber in that it lets you burn calories ultra fast (and some studies would say faster).

So what's the difference between these two machines? Here are some general differences you should know:
